After a 2-8 start to the season, Daniel Jones, the 6th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, has been benched.
Jones has had only one full season of solid production, in 2022, when he led the New York Giants to the playoffs. That year, he posted a 67.2% completion rate, threw for 3,000 yards, and had 15 touchdowns — his best season to date. However, his performance this year has been hampered by poor team play. The offensive line, outside of Andrew Thomas, has struggled, and Jones has lacked reliable weapons in the passing game.
Currently, the Giants are part of a five-way tie for the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. This draft class is considered deep, and recent mock drafts project the Giants selecting Michigan defensive back Will Johnson in the first round and Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers later on. If the losing continues, don’t be surprised if New York opts for Miami quarterback Cam Ward with the first overall pick instead.
As for Jones, his contract includes an out after this season, which would leave the Giants with dead cap in 2025-26. General Manager Joe Schoen faces a challenging offseason, with public confidence in his decisions beginning to wane.
Other key roster considerations include re-signing Darius Slayton, Azeez Ojulari, and Drew Lock. With the Giants holding the 17th-most cap space in the league, addressing the offensive line must also be a top priority.
From a coaching standpoint, no changes should be made. This roster has never been strong enough to succeed, and Jones’ inconsistent play has further hindered the team. With free agency looming, benching Jones might be the best decision for both sides, similar to how Sam Darnold’s career was reset.
While the Giants are in a tough spot, moving on from past mistakes is the best path forward.
