There’s race that’s been on my mind, all the time Su-suSonsio. And it don’t even know my name. But they’re racing just the same, Su-suSonsio. Ah, the lyrical genius of the late great Phil Collins. What? He’s not dead? Are you sure? Well shit, there goes the whole Sussudio/Sonsio joke thing. If you don’t know the song, look it up. It is actually a funny reference. Well, any way they ran the 11th annual Sonsio Grand Prix on Saturday, May the 10th, 2025.
Myself and Anvil’s very own, Acosta Merdano were on the scene at the Yard of Bricks to bring you the action from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It was a beautiful day in central Indiana to take the kids to the park, go hiking or bicycling, possibly catch up on yardwork or just have a nice family cookout in the backyard. Screw that crap! It’s me time! Lets go racing! It was a sunny day and reached a high 75 degrees. It felt quite warmer directly in the sun, but the weathermen said it was only 75 degrees, and we all know they never lie.
Acosta and I split up the race coverage between us. He took the Snake Pit mound between turns 5 and 6 and I took a spotter’s position in turn 1. Acosta had a great set up with comfortable chairs, plenty of food and beverages. I on the other hand got to lug a 70lbs cooler up 202 steeply angled metal steps to get up to my set. I would also like to mention, I had to traverse those steps anytime I needed anything. Bathroom, 404 hard metal steps up and down. Beef kabob? Traveled the 404 up and down steps to only find out that they only had pork and chicken. For a guy in his 50’s, that’s a lot of steps. I’m kind of rethinking next year. Acosta’s younger knees can have the spotter seats (and the endless supply of steps), and I’ll take the Snake Pit with the all the hot chicks, food and drink right there.
Alex Palou and Graham Rahal were leading the field of the 27 cars in the 2025 Indy Grand Pix. The race got off to a great start with Graham Rahal snipping ahead of Alex Palou in turn three on lap 1. Rahal held that lead position for 49 laps until his Cheesy Double Beef and Black Bean Burrito from Taco Bell he had at lunch came a-calling. That unscheduled pit stop cost Rahal quite a bit Saturday afternoon. Alex Palou, who stuck with his traditional meal of fried chicken, had no such intestinal distress, went on to lead 29 laps and eventually win the 2025 Indy Sonsio Grand Prix.
This was Alex’s third Indy Grand Prix victory in just the last three years! After the race had concluded, I had a chance to catch up with Alex Palou and ask him about his experience today. “We had excellent racing conditions and my crew had the car dialed in just right.” “I honestly think the main difference today was that I opted for Shani’s Secret Freid Chicken and avoided Taco Bell. That’s what the race really came down to.”
Graham Rahal ended up finishing a disappointing 6th in the 2025 Indy GP. My Anvil partner Acosta caught up to Graham Rahal after the race but he unfortunately did not get to speak with him. Although he did report that he witnessed Speedway legend and Graham’s very own Father, Bobby Rahal smacking Graham across the back of his head repeatedly shouting, “What the hell is wrong with you?!!!”
As the race crowd started to funnel out of the Speedway, Acosta and I compared our race notes. While we agreed we were probably going to both be dealing with red, sore skin for the next few days, we were unfortunately unable to come up with a consensus on who the real star of the day was. Acosta was staunch in his belief that Busch Light was the star of today’s event while I thought Travis Kelce’s Garage Beer w/ Lime was clearly the standout. Some things are just too close to call at times. Fortunately, there are only 14 more Sundays until the start of the 2025-2026 NFL season when we can drink inside and not worry about sunburn.
