Seven Shades of Habs Fandom

While being categorized by others isn’t typically embraced, many individuals willingly engage in self-reflection when presented with a list of different classifications, eager to discern where they fit and to compare their circumstances with those of others.

Hockey, like any other sport, boasts a diverse fanbase, each with their unique quirks, passions, and behaviours. From die-hard supporters who bleed their team’s colours to fair-weather enthusiasts who only surface during times of triumph, the spectrum of hockey fandom is vast and colourful. Whether you find yourself entrenched in statistical analysis or revealing in the age-old rivalries that ignite the sport, there’s a niche within hockey fandom for everyone.

Types of Fans

Let’s explore the various types of hockey fans, each adding their own flavour to the electrifying atmosphere of the game. There might be more, but I have come up with seven (7) different types of hockey fans.

1. Die-Hard Fans:
  • Description: Die-hard fans are extremely passionate and dedicated to their team. They live and breathe hockey, rarely missing a game and often planning their schedules around game times.
  • Behaviour:
    – Attend every game, home, and away if possible.
    – Decked out in team apparel from head to toe.
    – Know every player’s stats, history, and even personal details.
    – Highly vocal during games, cheering loudly and passionately.
    – Willing to travel long distances to support their team.
2. Fair-Weather Fans:
  • Description: Fair-weather fans tend to support a team only when they are doing well. They may not have a deep understanding of the sport but enjoy the excitement of winning.
  • Behaviour:
    – Only show interest when the team is winning.
    – May switch allegiance to a different team if their current team starts losing.
    – Less likely to attend games during rough patches.
    – Might jump on the bandwagon of successful teams.
3. Casual Fans:
  • Description: Casual fans enjoy hockey but don’t invest as much time or emotion into it as die-hard fans. They may watch games occasionally for entertainment.
  • Behaviour:
    – Watch games intermittently, usually when they have spare time.
    – Might attend games occasionally for social outings or entertainment.
    – Have a basic knowledge of the sport but may not know intricate details.
    – Follow major events like playoffs or championships but not every regular season game.
4. Bandwagon Fans:
  • Description: Bandwagon fans hop onto the hype train of successful teams. They may not have a genuine interest in hockey but join the excitement when a team is doing well.
  • Behaviour:
    – Suddenly start supporting a team when they are winning.
    – Have limited knowledge about the team’s history or players.
    – Jump from team to team depending on who is currently successful.
    – Often disappear when the team starts losing or when the season ends.
5. Fancy Stats and Strategy Nerds:
  • Description: These fans are deeply analytical and enjoy dissecting every aspect of the game, from player performance to strategic decisions made by coaches.
  • Behaviour:
    – Focus on statistics, advanced metrics, and tactical analysis.
    – Engage in discussions about player performance, team strategies, and coaching decisions.
    – Enjoy debating and predicting outcomes based on statistical analysis.
    – Might participate in fantasy hockey leagues or create their own statistical models.
6. Rivalry Enthusiasts:
  • Description: These fans thrive on the intense competition between rival teams. They relish in the animosity between teams and often engage in banter with fans of opposing teams.
  • Behaviour:
    – Live for games against arch-rivals.
    – Enjoy taunting and trash-talking fans of rival teams.
    – May have a deep-seated dislike for certain teams or players.
    – Feel a heightened sense of satisfaction when their team defeats a rival.
    – Might engage in friendly wagers or bets with fans of opposing teams.
7. Old-School Traditionalists:
  • Description: Old-school traditionalists have a deep appreciation for the history and traditions of hockey. They may prefer the style of play from past eras and hold nostalgic views of the sport.
  • Behaviour:
    – Favour a more physical style of play reminiscent of earlier decades.
    – Cherish the traditions of the sport, such as outdoor games or original team logos.
    – Hold strong opinions about rule changes or innovations that deviate from traditional hockey.
    – Idolize legendary players from the past and reminisce about iconic moments in hockey history.

You may recognize yourself in more than one category, and that’s perfectly normal. After all, when looking at a colour pallet, you have the basic colours but then, there is a multitude of other colours and shades, right?

In the tapestry of hockey fandom, each type of fan contributes to the rich fabric that makes the sport so captivating. Whether it’s the die-hards chanting passionately in the stands, the casual observers enjoying a game with friends, or the analytical minds dissecting every play, the diversity of hockey fandom ensures that there’s never a dull moment. So, whether you’re a lifelong supporter or a newcomer to the game, remember that hockey’s allure lies not only in the action on the ice but also in the vibrant community of fans that surrounds it.
