After 10 weeks of regular season play in the NFL, New England quarterbacks Drake Maye and Jacoby Brissett have spent a similar amount of time under center. Veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett was named the starter heading into the regular season over rookie Drake Maye. Brissett was brought in during the offseason to mentor Maye, the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Brissett started the first five games of the season before Drake Maye was given the opportunity to start in week six.
The position of New England’s next franchise quarterback has yet to be filled since the departure of seven time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady. The Patriots originally brought in former NFL MVP Cam Newton to fill in Brady’s shoes but his time in New England only lasted one season. In the 2021 NFL Draft, the Patriots selected Alabama’s Mac Jones in an attempt to get their new franchise quarterback. After a promising rookie season that ended in a playoff berth, Jones wasn’t able to find the same success and New England parted ways with Jones after three seasons. Taken third overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, Patriots fans are hopeful that Drake Maye will be the future of New England. After starting the season sitting behind Jacoby Brissett for five games, Maye now has five career starts under his belt.
Both quarterbacks have played in six games on the year and each have started five of those games. Brissett has attempted 159 passes and completed 94 of them, giving him a completion percentage of 59%. Maye has 150 passing attempts with 97 completions, leaving him with a 65% completion percentage on the year. Maye has accumulated 954 passing yards compared to Brissett’s 828. Brissett has only thrown two touchdown passes so far while Maye has thrown seven. Although Maye has better passing statistics than Brissett, he has thrown five interceptions compared to Brissett’s one.
Overall it appears as though the Patriots made the right decision having Drake Maye become the starting quarterback. Maye has provided a much-needed spark in whats been a rather dormant offense so far for New England. Showing a lot of potential in only a small sample size, it seems like New England may have their franchise quarterback in Drake Maye.
