Maple Leafs’ Captain Auston Matthews Looking to Find Goal Scoring Rhythm

The Toronto Maple Leafs are set to host the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday night at Scotiabank Arena, and while the Leafs have a 2-1 start, Captain Auston Matthews has had a hard time beginning his season on the right foot, with zero points in his first three games.

Captain Blues?

Auston Matthews was named the Leafs captain on August 14th, 2024, where John Tavares who was captain decided to hand it over to number 34 in a classy gesture, given Tavares is entering the final year of his seven year contract in hometown Toronto.

Matthews, had 69 goals last season, scoring at an unreal pace. In the first two games of the 2023-24 season, Matthews had two consecutive hat tricks. This year, some might call it a slump, as the Arizona Native has failed to get on the score sheet for three consecutive games. Last game versus the Penguins, the Leafs captain had eight shots on goal, followed by one versus New Jersey and six versus Montreal, combining for 15 shots in three games, a five shot per game pace. Therefore, it is not like he isn’t shooting, he may have a case of a monkey on the back.

Tonight would be an amazing chance for Matthews to break the ice as a captain and find himself back on the scoresheet, to finally begin his Rocket Richard campaign.
