The Toronto Maple Leafs take care of important business on Monday morning as they extend defensive defensemen Jake McCabe to a five year extension.
McCabe, 31, was acquired by the Leafs during the 2022-23 NHL trade deadline from the Chicago Blackhawks, where he was acquired for a 1st round draft pick. He will be signed until 2028-29 season, making 4.52 million dollars annually. While the term of the contract is hefty, the Leafs locked down a crucial piece to their blue line at a respectable cap hit given the salary cap rising after this season.
“While McCabe’s new 5-year extension has an AAV of $4.51M, there is some deferred making the total deal $23.5M.”

McCabe was one of several pending free agents going into the summer, with both Mitchell Marner and John Tavares still awaiting a contract extension or any sort of talk. GM Brad Treliving got one contract locked up, with lots of work to do still on the contract front.
