The Toronto Maple Leafs have started the season 6-5-2 for the second consecutive year, however their almost 70 goal scorer and new captain Auston Matthews is struggling to find the back of the net, well, to his standards.
For any other player, five goals in 12 games shouldn’t gather any sense of panic, but for Auston Matthews and given his goal scoring pedigree, there is cause for concern. However, he had more goals last year in the first two games, with back to back hat-tricks.

Maybe it’s going to take time to adjust as the new “C” for the Maple Leafs, with more to worry about than just scoring goals. He has a new role here in Toronto, and that is taking this core under his wing and providing leadership. Matthews has 11 points in 13 games this season, a rather underwhelming start. Number 34 has 56 shots on goal so far, with a ridiculously low shooting percentage calling at 8.9%, a number that is set to elevate as the games go on. As expected, all it takes is a streaky start for the Leafs’ star to find his scoring game back. I don’t see how he doesn’t have another 50 goal season under his belt, so Toronto fans shouldn’t worry too much.
