The Toronto Maple Leafs have made it clear that they are testing the waters for the market regarding Swedish defensemen Timothy Liljegren, who simply doesn’t fit the plans of Berube’s roster. Given the events that have unfolded in Utah, the former first round pick can be a trade candidate to GM Bill Armstrong’s side.
Utah Hockey Club has been hit with devastating news over the last few hours, as both defensemen Sean Durzi (Shoulder 6 months) and John Marino (lower back 4 months)will be missing long term due to injuries. The goal in Utah is to make the post-season, and it was evident with their off-season acquisitions such as Mikhail Sergachev from the Tampa Bay Lightning. With missing two right hand defensemen, GM Bill Armstrong will be calling team’s for a replacement, and that replacement may be amongst the Leafs’ scratches in Timothy Liljegren.
Sean Durzi (right shoulder) has been ruled out for 4-6 months, and John Marino (lower back) will miss 3-4 months, Utah announced.

Liljegren, 25, was drafted 17th overall in 2017 and has yet to live up to his potential. It has been a rocky road throughout his five years in the NHL with the big club, who found himself in numerous trade rumours before. This time, the situation in Toronto is set and there is more of a chance he is dealt than not.
As of right now, Utah has called up rookie defensemen Maverick Lamoureux, however this is a temporary replacement, as they do not plan on hindering his development with the Tucson Roadrunners.

While nothing is confirmed that there is indeed interest, expect talks to pick up in the coming days and I wouldn’t be surprised if Liljegren is on their radar for a reasonable price.
