As the Montreal Canadiens’ rebuild progresses, the organization is bolstering its roster with promising talent. The latest addition is top goaltending prospect Jacob Fowler, who has officially signed a three-year Entry-Level Contract (ELC) with the Canadiens and an American Hockey League (AHL) contract with the Laval Rocket. This move confirms recent speculations and underscores the team’s commitment to developing its future stars.
Fowler’s Collegiate Success
The 20-year-old Melbourne, Florida native has delivered exceptional performances during his tenure with Boston College. In his freshman year (2023-24), Fowler posted a 2.14 goals-against average (GAA) and a .926 save percentage (Sv%), leading the nation with 32 wins—a new NCAA record for a freshman goaltender. He continued his stellar play into his sophomore season (2024-25), achieving a 1.64 GAA, .940 Sv%, and seven shutouts, ranking near the top nationally in these categories.

Fowler’s outstanding performances earned him consecutive nominations as a finalist for the Mike Richter Award, presented annually to the top goaltender in NCAA Division I hockey. He was also honoured as the Hockey East Goaltender of the Year and a First Team All-Star for two straight seasons. Additionally, Fowler was longlisted for the Hobey Baker Award, recognizing the top NCAA Division I men’s ice hockey player.
“Fowler’s explosive lateral movement is the first thing that jumps out at most scouts. His ability to transition in and out of reverse-VH is quick and efficient, which makes him very effective on low-to-high passing plays. -EliteProspects 2023 NHL Draft Guide”
Transition to Professional Play
Fowler is set to join the Laval Rocket on Wednesday, following their return from a western road trip, and will conclude the season with them. His ELC is slated to commence next season. The Rocket currently lead the AHL standings with 92 points, providing a competitive environment for Fowler’s development. However, securing ice time won’t be straightforward, as he’ll be competing with goaltenders Cayden Primeau and Connor Hughes. It’s unclear if the management has assured the 2023 third-round pick of specific playing opportunities to encourage his signing.
Development Path and Expectations
While Fowler’s trajectory is promising, it’s anticipated he will spend time in the AHL to further develop his skills before making the leap to the NHL. This patient approach aligns with the Canadiens’ strategy of nurturing talent to ensure long-term success. The 6-foot 2-inches, 214 lbs goaltender’s mental fortitude and resilience, demonstrated throughout his young career, suggest he has the determination to overcome challenges and seize opportunities as they arise.
With prospects like Fowler in the pipeline, and the anticipated arrival of Ivan Demidov, the future in Montreal appears exceptionally bright. Fans have ample reason for optimism as the Canadiens’ rebuild progresses, blending youthful talent with seasoned leadership to forge a competitive team in the seasons to come.
