In defeating the New York Giants 26-18 on October 28, the Pittsburgh Steelers won their 21st straight Monday Night Football game.
On display for the Steelers were several players who will most likely be voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame one day. Leading that charge is T.J. Watt who had two sacks to add to his impressive career total but also another one of his patented “punch out” forced fumbles that he also recovered. When he decides to retire, Watt is a sure fire first ballot inductee.
Many believe Cameron Heyward is also headed to Canton. If Russell Wilson continues to play as well as he has in the last two victories and helps Pittsburgh win another Super Bowl an argument can be made for him to be voted into the HOF. Even without that he might be considered.
Chris Boswell has become a top five kicker in the NFL and he is a long way from retiring. But if he stays healthy he is a sure fire candidate to be honored with a yellow jacket.
When his career is over, total rushing yards will determine if Najee Harris is considered for Hall of Fame votes.
Then there is head coach Mike Tomlin. Many have already imagined a bust for Coach T. in the hallowed halls in Ohio. Listening to ESPN’s “Unsportsmanlike” show, Michelle Smallman, Chris Canty, and Evan Cohen were all raving about the Steelers’ performance against the Giants and all pledged Tomlin’s credibility to be a Hall of Fame member.
However, the show producer, one Pat Costello disagreed and said Tomlin is not worthy. I’m not sure what he is smoking but there is no doubt that Tomlin belongs among the elite and 17 straight winning seasons and not one losing season is proof enough.
Mike Tomlin has already had a team that won a Super Bowl and another that got there but lost. He’s a long way from retiring but when he does, he will have a five year wait before donning a yellow jacket.
