Divisional Thoughts

Some quick responses to the NFL’s divisional round games that have put the Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs into the AFC championship game and on the other side the Washington Commanders taking on the Philadelphia Eagles on the road in Philly for the NFC title.

  • Kansas City 23 Houston 14. Everyone expected the Chiefs to advance to the AFC title game. But the game had controversy with what the Texans deemed some bad officiating. Listen, Patrick Mahomes is now 10-0 in the divisional round. Credit to Houston for keeping it close but they were not going to win this game no matter what.

  • Washington 45 Detroit 31. This was a complete shock. In my opinion one of the biggest upsets in recent NFL playoff history. My first thought after this game was, “why couldn’t my team the Steelers find a quarterback like Jayden Daniels?” This kid is awesome. No rookie quarterback has ever made the Super Bowl. Can Daniels be the first? Detroit is one of four teams never to have played in a Super Bowl (Jacksonville, Cleveland, Houston the other three). They may never make it there. This just shows you that no matter what you do in the regular season if a team gets to the playoffs, it’s a brand-new season. Detroit was the best team in the NFC all year blowing teams out in some cases and was the favorite here. No one told Jayden Daniels and the Commanders that and what do you know…they are in the NFC title game.

  • Philadelphia 28 Los Angeles Rams 22. Sequon Barkley is having a career year no doubt. The New York Giants now look mighty stupid for letting him go. Matthew Stafford is now contemplating his future while the Eagles will try to get back to the Super Bowl and keep Jayden Daniels and Washington at home.

  • Buffalo 27 Baltimore 25. Mark Andrews dropped a pass that was in his hands and would have tied the game at 27 so the Bills get another shot at Kansas City. Andrew’s gaffe was reminiscent of the Jackie Smith drop in the Super Bowl versus the Steelers. I had the Ravens winning this game, but Josh Allen is playing out of his mind this season and he will be the difference in Kansas City next weekend. Lamar Jackson may never see a Super Bowl and for all the hoopla about Mike Tomlin and my Steelers failing to get past an opening round playoff game, Baltimore and all the losing teams in the divisional round are no better off.
