The Boston Bruins have extended General Manager Don Sweeney for another two seasons. This move comes as a surprise to some after a very disappointing 2024-2025 season for the Bruins. Trading their captain at the time, Brad Marchand, at the NHL Trade Deadline this year was a move that didn’t sit well with many Boston fans.
Sweeney has been the Bruins’ GM for the last decade. During this time period, the Bruins have made it to one Stanley Cup Final in 2019, losing to the St. Louis Blues. Boston has also won the President’s Trophy twice in that span and recorded an overall record of 458-233-91.
During the 2018-2019 season, Sweeney was name General Manager of the Year. He has had a successful tenure overall with the team but recent team struggles have left speculation of a change needing to be made in the front office.
In 2022-2023, the Bruins had a historic regular season that ended in a first round exit of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. 2023-2024 ended in a second round exit after almost blowing a 3-1 series lead in the first round against Toronto. This season the Bruins failed to make the playoffs, adding yet another disappointing ending to their recent seasons.
These next two seasons will be crucial for Sweeney and the Bruins as they are looking to turn their recent struggles around and reestablish themselves as playoff contenders.
