A Rough Nine Weeks

Over the last nine weeks, the Browns have taken us on yet another roller coaster ride. With wins over the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Baltimore Ravens, it is hard to say whether or not the Browns can win another game. The Jags may be the worst team in the league, the Ravens the best. It’s hard to know what to expect from this team week to week. The team has dealt with injuries all year, which is nothing new, but with all of this talent, it seems like the issue may rest with the coaching.

The trade deadline ended yesterday with Cleveland giving up Za’Darius Smith, who was second on the team in sacks. The Browns received a 2025 5th round pick and a 2026 6th round pick. The Lions received Smith and a 2026 7th round pick. Browns fans may have wanted to see more, as Cleveland’s offense ranks 31st, only ahead of the New England Patriots.

There was a glimpse of hope when Cleveland’s hero, Nick Chubb, returned from an MCL and ACL injury. This season, he is averaging 37.6 yards per game. In his last full season dating back to 2022, Chubb averaged 89.7 yards per game. What changed? Coming back from an ACL and MCL injury is never easy. Another reason is his offensive line has ranked anywhere from fifth best to dead last. With injuries to Jack Conklin, Jedrick Wills Jr., Joel Bitonio, James Hudson, Ethan Pocic, and Michael Dunn, it is hard for Chubb to get consistency. Having a healthy offensive line will be key for Nick Chubb. Moving Dawand Jones to left tackle has shown an improvement  in the line as well.

The Browns will be on a much needed bye week, so in the time until their next game, both rest and practice are huge. They will take on a 2-7 New Orleans Saints. After their loss last week, the Saints fired HC Dennis Allen. Yesterday, they traded star cornerback Marshon Lattimore. This may open the door for wide receivers Cedrick Tillman and Jerry Jeudy. Both have had great games this season, but not on a consistent basis. Jameis Winston will need to tap in to his game against the Ravens to produce a much needed win. As good as he was then, his three interceptions last week brings into question what we will see in the next game.
